FAR North thoroughbred racing heavyweights are salivating at the return of racing to Townsville’s Cluden Park this afternoon.

The track was closed following the Townsville Cup on July 29, with works to scarify, mow and hollow tine the surface to remove organic matter with the first race meet since to commence this afternoon.

Cairns Jockey Club general manager John Cameron ( right) believes a quality Cluden Park is key to the industry in the region. “It is imperative that Far North Queensland grows and remains said.

“The way in which the industry is run is through prize money and regular racing.

“The improved track in Townsville will make for continuity in racing which enables the trainers to do what they do.” strong,” Cameron

Tolga trainer Roy Chillemi, who has six horses nominated at the Townsville Turf Club today, is keen to return to a track where he has dominated for years.

“It is good to have Cluden back with a little bit more prize money,” Chillemi said.

“It is detrimental for our livelihood if there was not racing at Townsville because there is not enough racing around for trainers, jockeys and owners without it.

“It is key for the larger stables.

“You would not have owners come into horses if we did not have consistent racing.”
