Stadium workers back local heroes

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

THEY’RE building the new home for the North Queensland Cowboys and workers on the stadium site are among the club’s biggest supporters.

Mendi Constructions supervisor Matt Clifford said the whole team would be watching the game.

“All we talk about is footy,” Mr Clifford said.

“Mendi has supported the Cowboys. We had a lot to do with the original stadium being built. They did a lot of voluntary work.

“It will be a wonderful home ground for the Cowboys and will be really good for the town and the Cowboys.”

Mr Clifford, father of Cowboys Dally M under- 20s Player of the Year Jake, said the Cowboys had done it tough this year and were an inspiration.

“It just goes to show what a bit of self belief can do,” he said.

“There’s a buzz going around not just this town but the whole North.

“To do what they’ve done and make a grand final is absolutely unbelievable.

Mendi will bring in 200,000 tonnes of gravel to the site before Christmas.

So far workers have brought in about 30 per cent of the required fill.

Once it’s brought in, workers roll and compact it and once finished pylons will start being erected.

Mr Clifford said it was an important step in the process.

“It’s the foundations of it all,” he said.

“We have to get this right so there are no failures later.”
