Man suffers gunshot wound

- LUCY SMITH

POLICE swarmed on a Hyde Park unit block last night after a man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.

Several police units were called to the flats at Westbourne St about 6pm after a resident called triple- 0 and reported that a man had been shot. A 26- year- old man was later taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh.

It is understood that police believe he may have acciden- tally shot himself. His injuries were not serious.

Townsville police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Kylee Haydon said the injured man’s friend had driven him to the ambulance station at Hugh St. She said the man was later taken to Townsville Hospital in a stable condition.

“They’re not life- threatening injuries at all,” she said.

Sen- Sgt Haydon said officers found a small- calibre firearm on the ground outside the Westbourne St unit block.

“There was some indication that the firearm had been thrown on to the roof of the garage,” she said.

“Police have retrieved that firearm in order to make it safe and it’s in the possession of police.”

Sen- Sgt Haydon said Townsville detectives were investigating the incident.

“We’re still carrying out investigations in relation to ( who fired the gun),” she said.

“We do have some information but until such time as detectives have run out all possible lines of inquiry, that’s still unknown at this stage.

“Several ( next- door neighbours) have provided information to the police and we’re in the process of obtaining statements from them in relation to what they saw.”

A neighbour told the Bulletin he heard what sounded like a gunshot.

Sen- Sgt Haydon said it was too early in the investigation to say whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
