Obi’s cops it sweet, again

- CHRISTIE ANDERSON christie. anderson@ news. com. au

OBI’S Pantry has opened on Charters Towers Rd to feed Townsville’s men and women in blue.

The cafe has opened across the road from Mundingburra Police Station, serving coffee, sandwiches, pastries, cakes and other breakfast and lunch options.

Will Lound, who owns the cafe with business partner Lucy Savy, said they had wanted to open near a police station after previously owning NaKula cafe near the Townsville city police station.

“Last time we were across from the police station in the city, that gave us plenty of customers and now we’re across the road from a police station again, and it’s the biggest building on Charters Towers Rd,” he said.

“The police are starting to come in and a few of our old customers are over there now, so they are getting the word out for us.”

Mr Lound said the cafe was named after his daughter, whose nickname is Obi.

“She would come home from school and say ‘ the cupboard is empty, what can I eat?’ So now she can walk in here and have whatever she likes,” he said.

The cafe makes pies and sausage rolls in house and there is a variety of flavours, which are rotated. Obi’s Pantry also has mushy peas available with their pies.

The sandwich bar is already proving popular, with gourmet options available such as smoked salmon, camembert cheese, fresh asparagus, rare roast beef and roasted eggplant.

Obi’s Pantry is open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 2pm on Saturday.
