STRAND PROTEST AT ‘ GIVEAWAY’ OF NORTH

- DANNI SHAFIK

ADANI protesters gathered on The Strand on Saturday afternoon to spell out their opposition to the Carmichael mega- mine.

The protest was one of a series of antiAdani events held across the country.

More than 200 Townsville protesters held red and white signs above their heads alongside each other to spell out the phrase “Stop Adani”, while a drone took photos from overhead.

Helen Griffith from Kirwan said she reserved the right to voice where her tax money should go.

“We are being ignored because the majority of people are only seeing one side of the site construction: that it will bring income and jobs,” she said.

“The construction plans only highlight all the supposed benefits but these are void once you consider the other effects such as our environment, our health and our water resources.”

Ms Griffith said it was time for the Government to stop giving away North Queensland’s precious resources.

“We are reminding them that they represent the people, not their own pockets,” she said.

Rodney Thomas from West End said the mine would be a mistake for Australia and urged people to wake up, and stop the site from happening.

“It will mean the world to future generations and the marine life as well,” Mr Thomas said. “This coal mining must stop for our precious environment that needs respect and protection.”

Mr Thomas said the community needed the Great Barrier Reef more than the mine.

“Economically and in every other way it makes way more sense to go renewable,” he said.
