Thugs hurl bike at car

- SAM BIDEY

A TERRIFIED couple were forced to drive away from aggressive thugs with a pushbike through their windscreen on Tuesday night.

Debbie Wilcox and Tarant Metherall were driving along Fulham Rd, Pimlico, about 11pm when five indigenous youths aged from their late teens to early 20s attempted to stop their car.

The pair refused to stop, sparking a chain reaction that ended with a bicycle being hurled through their windscreen.

Ms Wilcox said they turned around when they noticed another car had been confronted by the troublemakers.

“They tried pulling up another car so I did a U- turn to assist them,” Mr Metherall said.

“As I was talking to them a guy on a bicycle ( one of the group) approached me and was yelling.

“I didn’t know what his intentions were so I did another U- turn to get out of there and as I did he’s run up and thrown his bike through the windscreen.”

Fearful of what could happen next, Mr Metherall took off with the pushbike blocking his vision and its handlebars just centimetres from his face.

Mr Metherall said shattered glass sprayed across his face and he couldn’t see anything through the windscreen. He eventually stuck his head out the window to drive and managed to safely get the car off Fulham Rd and on to Kings Rd before removing the bike and calling the police.

“I ... cried my eyes out,” Ms Wil- cox said. “No one should ever have to go through something like that.”

Superintendent Steve Munro said the behaviour exhibited by the offenders was completely unacceptable.

Supt Munro said this was one of many instances of youth crime that Townsville had experienced recently.

“A lack of respect for others and a lack of respect for the community will not be tolerated,” he said.

Supt Munro called on witnesses to come forward, particularly the elderly couple who were in the other car stopped by the group.
