FAMILY EVENT T O BUILD WELLNESS

- VICTORIA NUGENT

A FREE family event is set to push an important mental health message.

The family fun day, held today at Heatley Park to coincide with Queensland Mental Health Week, offers activities including a jumping castle, face painting, rock climbing, laser skirmish, music and a screening of animation movie Trolls.

Townsville city councillor Kurt Rehbein said movie nights were popular with the local community and the event was a chance to build a sense of belonging.

“I think this is a great way to get to know your neighbours, a way to establish networks within the community and have a relaxing night out with family and friends,” he said.

“It’s also fantastic that a number of community organisations have come together to promote positive mental health for us all.”

Townsville Youth Council representative Jessica Ward said it was vital young people understand the importance of talking about mental health and promoting wellness.

“We need to work together to break the stigma around mental health issues,” Ms Ward said.

“We believe creating awareness and education we can help the youth as well as the wider community on one of the most prominent issued faced within society today.”

The event will run from 4pm to 8.30pm at Heatley Park next to the Long Tan Memorial Pool, with the movie screening from 6.30pm.
