A MOUNT Isa man has faced court after allegedly stabbing, beating and choking a woman in Charters Towers overnight.

Police will allege that about 9.30pm, the 44- year- old man attacked the 32- year- old female victim with whom he was in a domestic relationship at a Bluff Rd address.

District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Matt Lyons said the man allegedly stabbed his victim in the left shoulder, punched, kicked and choked her before a witness contacted police.

“She sustained significant bruising to the face, possible facial fractures, cuts to the face and a stab wound approximately 1cm in length ( to the shoulder),” said.

“Police attended, located the victim and arrested the alleged offender who was present at the scene.”

Charters Towers Police officer- in- charge Senior Sergeant Graham Lohmann said domestic violence was an increasing issue in the community with the number of offences Sen- Sgt Lyons and level of violence particularly concerning.

“We’ve seen a number of recent incidents in Charters Towers where the level of violence associated with domestic violence is much more significant that what we’d normally see,” Sen- Sgt Lohmann said.

“This follows a recent incident where a Charters Towers man was charged with a num- ber of offences including torture.”

Sen- Sgt Lohmann said there had been 16 incidents of domestic violence in the past month; a significant amount for the region at this time of year.

“We are concerned – normally in this area, incidents of domestic violence rise in the hotter months leading up to Christmas but it seems to be earlier this year,” he said. “Our approach is robust investigation of complaints and prosecution where there is sufficient evidence, as well as assisting in the commencement of domestic violence orders.”

The man faced Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday where he was remanded to reappear on November 23.
