History in NQU branding

NORTH Queensland United FC has gone back to the future after yesterday unveiling the club’s logo and colours for next season and beyond.

North Queensland’s logo will feature the region’s traditional representative football colours of blue, gold and red, and include a football emblem rising into a brolga.

Club officials say the new colours cement NQ United as the region’s new Queensland NPL team, with the logo ( pictured) a dramatic departure from the green and white colours of previous NPL licence holders Northern Fury FC.

United coach Ian Shaw joined club director Glenn Mintern at the unveiling of the new logo at Townsville Bulletin Square yesterday.

“It has that united badge impact,” Mintern said. “It’s a great logo and we’re very happy with the way it’s come up.

“It incorporates the brolga of North Queensland Football through the traditional colours in the red, gold and blue.

“So we’re really excited to be able to finally unveil it.”

NQ United will hold the club’s first trials this weekend at Brolga Park, starting on Saturday with Under- 20s and open men at 10am.

Shaw is still confident of recruiting European players to the new NPL team, including a striker from the Czech Republic.

“I’ve been talking to a few players from Europe and if they come in they’ll be a great asset to the club,” Shaw said.

“A couple have played professionally, so I think that’s what we need to set a training standard.

“The benefit is it will bring a professional attitude into the club.

“One of the fellas has played highest level in the second level of the ( German) Bundesliga, so he knows what it’s like to be a professional footballer. I’m thinking if we can get that to the club, attitudes will change and ( players) will be really competing for positions.” Shaw also has a burning personal desire for success after being let go from Tasmanian NPL team Olympia Warriors seven rounds into the 2017 season despite Olympia leading the competition.

“Every Australian coach has a burning passion to prove they can do the job, it’s what drives us,” Shaw said.

“If you haven’t got that, you’re probably just filling in time in my opinion. You have to have that drive to be the best and I want that for my players, so if that carries over into the playing group I’ll be happy.

“It’s about building – we’re starting fresh – but we want to compete against the best teams in the league, and once we do that our players are building and learning as well.”
