Soldiers a class act

- RACHEL RILEY

CHOCOLATE from Mission Beach has won over judges in an international cocoa competition.

Charley’s Chocolate Factory beat entrants from all over the world to win an International Cocoa Award at a recent event in Paris.

Chris Jahnke, who runs the factory with his wife Lynn, said they were “gobsmacked to have beaten major cocoa producing countries”.

The couple, who used to trade in women’s handbags, moved from Melbourne only four years ago to establish their new venture. SCHOOL uniforms at Ryan Catholic College took on a new look, with students receiving a welcome visit from Townsville soldiers.

Ryan Catholic College held its annual Defence Day this week, during which students got to try on helmets and protective equipment, observe weapons and climb into armoured vehicles.

The school’s Defence transition aide Nikki Blackwell said about 10 per cent of the school’s population had a connection to defence forces.

She said the event was a great nod to the military families in the school community but also for the students who’ve never experienced Defence.

“Some of our little kids have never really seen anything like this before,” she said.

For the older students, Ms Blackwell said it was also a good opportunity to meet with recruiters.

“My son in Year 12 is just about to finish and is joining the Army and I know there are quite a few other kids looking into Defence as a career,” she said.
