Paro a future world champ

FORMER supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes any attempt to make Formula One more competitive by imposing a budget cap is doomed to fail because the big teams will still find a way to stay on top.

The Briton also warned that a threat by Ferrari to walk away after 2020 should be taken seriously. Liberty and the governing International Automobile Federation are due to present cost- control proposals to teams this week.

Despite talk of the sport heading towards a high- stakes showdown over the distribution of revenues, the matter won’t be discussed at the upcoming F1 group strategy meeting. NORTH Queensland boxing prodigy Liam Paro believes he has taken a vital step towards fulfilling his world title dreams after taking his perfect professional record to 11 wins.

Paro scored a unanimous points win over Perth- based Komkit Chanawong on Saturday night as part of Mark Flanagan’s “Homecoming” event, and while Paro could not land an eighth consecutive knockout, the former Upper Ross Hawks fighter was ecstatic.

“It’s the first time in seven fights I’ve got the full rounds out, so it’s a good test to see where I’m at,” Paro said.

“We knew it was going to be tough, we got told he ( Chanawong) could hit hard and had a big overhand right, and he showed that.

“First round was pretty much being cautious, feeling him out and then going from there.”

Paro went into the bout with huge raps from sparring partner Jeff Horn and Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech, with the pair labelling Paro a future world champion.

Paro, 21, knows he still has plenty of work to get there, but at no point has he ever got ahead of himself.

Paro trained in Townsville with the Upper Ross Hawks from 2012 until last year, when he shifted to Brisbane and started training under Alfie Di Carlo.

“I’m happy he got the rounds out and as you could see it was a bit of a boxing masterclass,” Di Carlo said.

“The kid just doesn’t get hit. For five rounds he was just too hard to stop. That was a great fight and it’s been a while since he’s gone the distance because he’s been stopping everybody.”

Di Carlo said Paro was not the type of fighter to let praise from Horn and Fenech get to his head.

“I don’t really have to worry about that,” he said. “He’s very confident with himself and I almost have to stop him from training.

“To have those guys saying those things is fantastic, but he has to go in and do it.”

In saying that, Di Carlo says Horn and Fenech are spot on.

“Liam can go all the way, I have no doubt in my mind,” he said.

“He’s sparred the best we have here in Australia and he holds his own quite comfortably.

“We have time on our side because he’s only 21 years old and that’s very young for a professional.”
