Veteran aiming high to create driving record

- RACHEL RILEY

AN INSPIRATIONAL Townsville veteran has travelled halfway across the planet on a mission to set a new world record.

Paul Warren is part of a 14- man team trying to set a new world record for highaltitude driving.

Equipped with two Rheinmetall MAN HX trucks, the expedition is aiming to reach the highest point on earth accessible to motor vehicles – the 6890m Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano, on the border of Chile and Argentina.

In order to set a world record, Mr Warren and the team will have to reach an altitude of at least 6690m above sea level.

Mr Warren lost a leg after an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2009, which also claimed the life of his friend.

He said for him the expedition was about capability and raising money for The Bravery Trust, which provides financial assistance to military personnel in need.

“We aren’t defined by our injuries but defined by our actions,” he said.

“What’s important to me is that our abilities take centre stage, not our socalled disabilities.”
