SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR TAVERN

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

A WELL- KNOWN Townsville tavern will soon be reborn at a new location with plans for a rooftop bar.

The owners of Crown on Palmer, Holly and Wes Newman, are preparing for a new era when they reopen the business at 61- 63 Palmer St.

He is also viewing it as an opportunity to move into a more suitably sized building and expand the restaurant. Mrs Newman said the current premises, at 69 Palmer St, had a large bar that was under- utilised.

“Where we have succeeded is the restaurant and the new place is more of a restaurant with a small bar,” he said.

Mr Newman is hoping to open a beer garden down the side of the new tavern.

He said the next step would be constructing a sky bar on the roof.

“Once those three concepts come together, we’ll end up with a similar- sized venue to what we had but with three usable venues,” Mr Newman said.

“It will be the first proper sky bar in Townsville.”

Keeping the business on Palmer St allowed the tavern to retain its name.

Mr Newman said all 30 staff would keep their jobs and were excited about the move.

The business will close on November 26 and reopen at the new venue on November 28.
