Man jailed for child porn stash

- LUCY SMITH

A MAN has been jailed after he was busted with more than 47,000 child porn images and 3000 videos on his computer hard drive.

Christopher Andrew Speechley, 48, pleaded guilty in Townsville District Court to accessing child exploitation material, possessing child exploitation material and possessing a dangerous drug ( marijuana seeds).

Judge Paul Smith said Speechley had a “good work history” as a landscape contractor until 2013, when he suffered an injury.

“It was after the injury … you had too much time on your hands and started looking at pornography on the internet,” he said.

Judge Smith said police detected Speechley downloading child exploitation material in July last year.

They searched three months later.

Speechley assisted police by producing a hard drive and admitting to downloading child pornography two days prior.

“Police looked at the hard drive and saw a large number of photos and images,” the judge said.

Judge Smith said there were 47,703 images that had been downloaded over four years.

A number of them were in the more serious categories of child pornography – they were “quite disgusting”.

There were also more than 3372 videos.

Speechley was sentenced to three years’ jail, with release after 10 months. The judge said he would now be on a police reporting register. his home
