Coalition commits $ 2m fund for transition to workplace

-

THE state LNP has thrown its support behind a new 24/ 7 veterans support hub but has stopped short of offering up the desired site.

The Bulletin revealed last week retired Lieutenant General John Caligari’s ambition to open a 24/ 7 services hub for ex- Defence personnel and their families in Townsville.

Under his proposal, The Oasis Townsville will provide a one- stop shop for welfare support and employment transition services to ex- ADF personnel and their families.

Labor committed, if reelected, to offering the former Department of Primary Industries Biosecurity lab on the corner of Darter and Colvin streets, Oonoonba for the facility.

When asked by the Bulletin if the LNP would do the same, there was no commitment.

“Myself, Matthew ( Derlagen) and Nick ( Martinez) met with John earlier this week and we were really excited about the proposal that was put to us,” LNP Townsville candidate Casie Scott said.

Ms Scott reaffirmed the LNP’s commitment that if it was to win government, the party would appoint a dedicated veteran affairs minister as well as a $ 2 million fund for the transition of defence personnel into mainstream workplace.

“The LNP is very supportive of current serving personnel and obviously veterans and their families,” she said.

Ros Bates, LNP shadow minister for communities, women and youth, child safety and the prevention of domestic and family violence, said “further announcements” would be made during the election campaign.
