PLAY TELEVISION BLASKO FILLS IN THE BLANKS

- DANIELLE MCGRANE

Blasko invited cameras in to document one of the toughest moments in her musical career.

Last year, the singer- songwriter faced writer’s block, at the same time she lost a few key people in her team who had been with her throughout her career and she was figuring out how to be a mother for the first time.

“I was sort of at a place where I had been a bit stuck and I wasn’t feeling that creative or I wasn’t sure where I was at,” Blasko says. “It was definitely the hardest place I’d found myself just overall. Sometimes it feels like doors are closing and you kind of lose a sense of yourself, or you just can’t see a way forward in a few aspects of life. I guess I probably hadn’t felt it to that extent before.”

Instead of burying herself away, she took up an artist- in- residence spot at Campbelltown Arts Centre in Sydney to try to spark her creative juices and allowed the process to be filmed for ABC documentary Blasko.

“This opportunity was the thing I had to hold on to and I was forced to shake myself out of this hole, this slump. And that’s good.

That’s the thing I think we all need reminding of is that sometimes it’s just about taking a couple of simple steps forward and then the rest tends to fall together from there,” she says.

Her two- week stint led to the beginnings of her sixth album, Depth of Field, which she will release in February, and it was all captured in the doco.
