Tanya works it out

- TONY RAGGATT

TANYA Caisley’s schedule shows we really are a land of opportunity if you are willing to work hard and have the family support to help when needed.

Ms Caisley has enrolled full- time for a nursing diploma introduced in Central Queensland University’s new Townsville CBD campus.

She is doing her studies while also working as a carer in an aged- care home and raising four children aged 3, 7, 9 and 11. The gruelling load is made possible through the help of her parents and partner.

Ms Caisley admitted her routine was “crazy full- on” but said she was very satisfied.

“It’s been crazy full- on she said.

“I find CQUni very supportive and you can reach out for help in so many ways and the support is always there.”

Ms Caisley has always wanted to be a nurse but kept putting it off, especially after having children.

She also questioned her ability, having left school after Year 9 and not having studied until recently gaining an entry level certificate in really, really good ... but I’m loving it,” aged care and disability care. Ms Caisley has worked in her carer’s role for about two years.

“I finally went ‘ no, this isn’t good enough for me or my kids’, so I enrolled into the Diploma of Nursing,” she said.

The diploma is being delivered oncampus in Townsville for the first time.

The Townsville campus is home to a state- of- the- art nursing simulation training facility that features hi- tech laboratory equipment allowing students to take a hands- on approach to real- world learning.

The study includes work with interactive or virtual patients.

A university spokeswoman said the response to the nursing diploma and other courses had been very good with enrolments surpassing 1000 students this year.

All things going to plan, Ms Caisley will complete her diploma at the end of next year and be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as an enrolled nurse.

Ms Caisley said she would eventually like to do a nursing degree to become a registered nurse.
