INNER CITY PROMO BIG WINNER AGAIN

- KELSIE IORIO

RETAILERS are taking revitalisation of the CBD into their own hands to portray Townsville’s inner- city in a trendy new light.

Hoi Polloi Espresso Bar’s “A Day in Denham Lane” gives retailers a chance to get exposure in a casual laneway setting, which so far has been a hit with participants. Hoi Polloi owners, brothers Sean and Conor Doyle, say the laneway is too good not to use.

“The retailers here are dying for that chance to show the people of Townsville what is really on offer,” he said.

“But to change the perception, first of all people need some sort of incentive to actually venture in.

“The Day in Denham Lane is purely about showcasing the hidden gems that are within our city, it’s not about making money but rather exposing people to the CBD and the potentials within.”

Last Saturday was the third time A Day in Denham Lane has been held, with attendance growing each time.

It features food and drink, live music and entertainment, second- hand clothing and art, craft and flower stalls.

“It’s no secret the CBD has been struggling for some time now, there’s been talk about revitalising the city but if it’s really going to happen we need to entice people in here to see what’s really on offer,” Conor said.

“This event is about taking a stand and showing people that there is always something going on in Townsville, it just takes getting out there looking outside the square.”

Conor said the boys’ mother, Townsville City councillor Colleen Doyle, was a driving force behind A Day in Denham Lane, stemming from her own interest in bringing life back into the city.
