Alert for schoolie bingeing

- SAM BIDEY

UNDERAGE drinking and drug use top the list of offences police are preparing for as school leavers’ celebrations begin this weekend.

Police have launched the Party Safe program, encouraging Year 12 graduates to exercise caution and obey the law during Schoolies Week.

Inspector Damien Crosby said that while this was an exciting time for people leaving high school, he warned them against making poor decisions.

“Think before you act and act responsibly, make good choices and don’t be influenced by peer group pressure,” he said. “Historically during this time of the year, underage drinking is very prevalent.

“It is an offence to possess a ( illicit) drug and if you sustain a conviction for drug possession or drug supply, that can have far- reaching consequences for future employment opportunities as well as travel.”

Insp Crosby said uploading material to social media could also impact someone’s future.

Giving false information to police can result in a $ 378 fine, supplying liquor to a minor in a public place risks a $ 1009 fine and supplying alcohol to a minor in a licensed premises could cost more than $ 2500.

Townsville graduates are expected to party locally, on Magnetic Island or on farms.

Some will travel to Airlie Beach and the Gold Coast.

Insp Crosby said most local celebrations would be in parties and he encouraged people to register events with police.

“If you register your party with the Queensland Police Service, you will get specific advice tips and hints on how to respond should gatecrashers arrive at your party,” he said.
