LNP plan to boost Palm Island jobs

- BETTINA WARBURTON

AN LNP government would deliver more jobs and economic opportunity on Palm Island, with funding for a new economic development officer.

Townsville LNP candidate Casie Scott said the newlyfunded position would help to empower the local community.

“This is a $ 150,000 funding commitment for a dedicated economic development officer on Palm Island to drive economic growth,” Ms Scott said.

“It is important locals are given every opportunity for employment and training and the best way is through a renewed economic focus.”

The LNP also announced a $ 3 million commitment to the Indigenous Diabetes Eyes and Screening Van to take specialist ophthalmology and optometry services to islander communities including Palm Island.

“We know that over 37 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are affected by diabetes, almost eight times higher than the general population,” Ms Scott said.

“A third of those with diabetes will also suffer from diabetic retinopathy, a complication which damages blood vessel inside the retina.

“Regular eye exams can reduce the risk of vision loss and blindness, with 94 per cent of diabetes- related vision loss in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders preventable or treatable.

“While the Labor State Government has refused to renew funding for this vital service, the LNP is committed to ensuring it continues.”

Ms Scott was also pleased to see Federal Government commitments of $ 10 million to complete the second stage of the redevelopment of the Bwgcolman Retail and Business Precinct on Palm Island and $ 135,000 for the inaugural Didge Fest, following recent discussions between herself and Senator Ian Macdonald.
