Bright’s Brock shock

- JAMES PHELPS

V8 VETERAN Jason Bright has made the stunning claim that Scott McLaughlin is better than the late, great Peter Brock.

Ahead of this weekend’s one- on- one fight between McLaughlin and Jamie Whincup for the Supercars crown, Bright said the DJR/ Team Penske young gun was the best V8 racer he had driven against during his celebrated 20- year career.

And Bright has raced against Brock, Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes and Whincup, who are all undisputed legends of the sport.

“I think Scott is the greatest I have seen,’’ Bright said.

“Some of his laps this year have just been spectacular.

“I don’t think I have ever seen anyone get as much out of his car as Scott does. He is just unbelievable.’’

But to rate McLaughlin ahead of nine- time Bathurst winner Brock, who was once in the same Holden Racing Team stable as Bright, is sure to spark widespread debate.

“Look, it is hard to compare guys across different eras,’’ Bright said.

“But I just haven’t seen someone with this much raw talent or ability to get a result out of a car.’’

Bright also put McLaughlin’s championship rival Whincup ahead of Brock.

“Jamie’s achievements speak for themselves,’’ Bright said ahead of the mouthwatering Newcastle 500 CBD street fight.

“His records are unbelievable. And, yes, it is hard to compare them.

“It would be out of Scott and Jamie. Scott is just well on top of his game.’’

Bright said McLaughlin had shown himself to be a champion- in- waiting through his feats in a Garry Rogers Motorsport Volvo.

The Kiwi won six races in a X60 before switching to DJR/ Team Penske at the beginning of this year.

“Everyone thought that the Volvo was the best weapon out there when Scott was winning races,’’ Bright said.

“But he kept on showing up his teammates and they were no slouches.

“I think he proved that he was the reason why they were winning races, not the car.”
