JUST hours after White Ribbon Day officially closed, a Townsville woman was allegedly punched, strangled and held against her will in a domestic violence incident.

At 4am on Sunday, a 32year- old Vincent woman was held for 2 ½ hours against her will in a terrifying encounter with a former partner.

Inspector Damian Irvine said police would allege a 30year- old man came to the woman’s Paskin St house uninvited and forced his way into her home.

The man then allegedly punched her on the nose and mouth, strangled her and held her against her will.

The woman had to wait for the accused to fall asleep before she could phone police, who came to her aid.

“She was bleeding from the nose and mouth and advised she had been strangled during the assault,” Insp Irvine said.

“( Strangulation) shows more propensity for violence and more intent to cause harm.”

Insp Irvine said White Ribbon Day on Saturday was a fantastic initiative in the fight against domestic violence and it was disappointing to see such offending on the same weekend.

“Hundreds of high- profile men throughout Australia pledged to eradicate domestic violence and then the weekend ticks over and we see it time and time again, more and more domestic violence assaults in this area and the rest of Queensland,” Insp Irvine said.

“I think there is a small percentage of people out there who just don’t get the message.

“It’s our intent to vigorously investigate complaints and charge people if they commit domestic violence.”

The 30- year- old man was charged with strangulation, deprivation of liberty and assault.

He was held in custody to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court at a later date.

A separate domestic violence incident happened on Friday night when a 25- yearold Yabulu man allegedly reversed his car into a vehicle driven by a woman.

Police will allege the man then got into the woman’s car and drove it into the gutter along Tango Court, Kirwan, to cause further damage to her vehicle.

The man was charged with six driving offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
