Stockland seeks to beef up parking

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

ONE of Townsville’s largest shopping centres is planning to build nearly 400 new carparks.

Stockland Townsville has applied to Townsville City Council for planning permission to build 392 carparks and eight trolley bays in land bordered by Alfred, Patrick and Elizabeth streets in Aitkenvale.

Stockland has been operating a temporary carpark over part of the site.

It has been granted approval for extensions to the complex at the corner of Ross River Rd and Nathan St.

“Stockland has acquired the final additional land parcel adjacent to the established carpark,” town planner Brazier Motti said.

“This will allow the logical extension to the carpark.”

Access will be through two existing two- way entry points at the northern corner of the site at Patrick St and Alfred St.

The public can make submissions on the impact assessable proposal.

A spokesman for Stockland said the company recently acquired 55 Elizabeth St.

“This development application was lodged to consolidate the landholdings approval,” he said.

Stockland development manager Michael Buchanan said: “This development application allows us to consolidate our landholdings across the retail site. Once approved, we will look to finalise the development works for Stockland Townsville.

“We also continue to progress plans for a future entertainment and leisure precinct at the centre and will provide an update on next steps in the new year.”
