Downer’s Adani jobs rush begins
THE primary contractor to Adani’s Carmichael coal mine, Downer Mining, is calling for potential employees and suppliers to the project from Townsville and Palm Island.
The contractor and the proponent, Adani Australia, have announced employment information sessions at several sites around Queensland, including at Townsville and Palm Island on December 12 and 13 respectively.
On its jobs portal, Downer says it will provide an outline of future employment opportunities and prospects for local business supply.
The Carmichael mine will be developed on the northern Galilee Basin in central Queensland, about 460km southwest of Townsville.
Downer says employees will commute on a fly- in, fly- out basis from Rockhampton and Townsville.
While it has been reported that Downer is yet to sign a binding contract and will not do so until the Indian group finalises funding for the initial stage of the project, Downer’s jobs portal said it was the “primary contractor”.
“As the primary contractor, Downer Mining’s services will include mine planning, drilling, blasting, overburden removal, coal mining, coal processing, rehabilitation, civil works and maintenance of mo- bile and fixed plant,” the company said.
In a statement this week, Adani said job creation for regional Queensland across its mine, rail and port projects was well under way.
Adani hoped the regional employment events would help to create “a positive outlook for the regions moving forward into 2018”.
“As our project continues to move forward, we are excited to bring regional Queensland workers on board to help us start building our mine, rail and port projects,” Adani Australia CEO and Country Head Jeyakumar Janakaraj said.
“Groups hoping to stop us have failed because we have already started.”
Downer held a job- readiness event in Rockhampton yesterday while more events are being held in Woorabinda, Cherbourg, Townsville and Palm Island.
