THE Townsville Hospital Foundation has gathered more than $ 50,000 thanks to support from volunteers and the public after three big fundraisers exceeded expectations.

The grand total of $ 50,500 will remain in North Queensland, going towards the hospital’s next priority, which is yet to be announced.

Townsville Hospital Foundation general manager Judy Higgins- Olsen said it was exciting that they had surpassed their target budget after holding the events.

The fundraisers kicked off with a book fair in September, which returned after a fiveyear break. More than 10,000 books were donated and sold.

In October, the hospital revamped its annual gala ball with a Brighten the Night dinner, which raised the most cash of the three events.

The hospital’s annual Wear a Bear Day, also held in October, brought more funds and plenty of smiles from patients and families who participated.

Mrs Higgins- Olsen said there was no doubt all three events would return in 2018.

“We look forward to the community continuing to support our 100 per cent local charity,” she said. “We have had some wonderful sponsors and amazing local businesses who made donations, and would like to make a special mention to our wonderful volunteers.”

The foundation’s volunteers have played a vital role in its success and have been named the “Sunshine Staff” for their bright yellow shirts.

“Their generosity in ( giving) their time is just mind- blowing and we wouldn’t be here without them,” she said.

The foundation’s major sponsors in the events were Townsville City Council, Grace Removals, Queensland Country Credit Union, Jewellery by Design, and Cameron and Co Dental.
