JUST THE THING TO
THE SUMMER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS HAVE ROLLED AROUND AGAIN AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF ACTIVITIES ACROSS TOWNSVILLE TO GET CHILDREN AWAY FROM SCREENS, OUT OF THE HOUSE AND AVOIDING BOREDOM, WRITES WHILE summer holidays are a well- deserved break from school, the Summer Writing Club aims to keep reading and writing skills active over the break in a fun way.
Local author Ian McIntosh said the idea came to him when he found there was a summer reading club to encourage children to read books over the holidays.
“Summer Writing Club is a fun, engaging and practical alternative to gaming devices and other, similar types of technology that encourages kids to use their imagination and be creative,” he said.
Activities include 40 boredom- busting creative writing challenges in 40 days starting on December 11, with author tips and tricks along the way to inspire and motivate.
“It’s not just about writing stories either,” McIntosh said. “There are lots of writing challenges that are purely designed to be fun.”
McIntosh said while the club was aimed at children aged seven and above, there were no real rules about who could get involved.
“I really don’t mind who signs up,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone who would like to have fun, learn something new and develop their creative writing skills, so even teens and adults are welcome to join in.
“( It) is a fantastic opportunity to encourage budding young writers to use their imagination and to develop their creative writing skills.
“It would make a brilliant Christmas gift idea.”
