CEOS PUT BEST FEET FORWARD

- DANNI SHAFIK

TOWNSVILLE business and community leaders literally walked on water to support people living with disabilities in the inaugural Cootharinga CEO Challenge on Saturday.

Cootharinga North Queensland called on business people to take each other on in a race across the Rockpool at The Strand while wearing giant inflatable shoes.

CEO Peter Mewett said the event was just as much fun as he thought it would be.

“The general public got into the spirit and we had people around the Rockpool cheering on the contestants who were paddling on inflatable whales and then giant shoes,” he said.

The 20 competitors had raised more than $ 15,000 for Cootharinga on Saturday, with the tally climbing.

Mick Rowan, from airconditioning and refrigeration company RowanAir, won the challenge on the water, while Wilmar Sugar’s John Pratt raised the most money.

Both winners offered their prize – a trip for two each to Bali – to their highest donors.

“Part of why we had CEOs is because CEOs contribute to their community every single day and it’s very difficult to shine if you aren’t given the opportunity,” Mr Mewett said.

The event will be held annually across North Queensland after its success, with a different challenge each year.
