Ross River boat ban in wake of teen death

- ANDREW BACKHOUSE

A STRETCH of Ross River is closed to all power boating until further notice as investigations continue into the tragic death of a teenager on the waterway.

Luke Powell, 15, was being towed by a jet ski near the Loam Island boat ramp about 1pm on Sunday when his tube veered too close to the river bank and flipped.

The teenager landed on rocks, suffering severe head injuries, and could not be revived.

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Patrick Quirk said the decision to close the Loam Island boat ramp was made in the interests of public safety.

“During the investigation, several previously unidentified underwater obstructions were discovered, which meant we had to act immediately,” Mr Quirk said.

He said the closure should not be seen as a move to preempt any findings that may arise from the police investigation.

“Maritime Safety Queensland is committed to ensuring the safety of all waterway users and we understand this will have a significant impact on recreational boating, especially at the weekend,” he said.

“We are working closely with water police and stakeholders such as waterskiing and jetskiing clubs, who appreciate the seriousness of the situation.

“Maritime Safety Queensland, with Townsville ( City) Council support, has locked the entry gates to the boat ramp today and an underwater survey is being arranged to take place at the weekend.

“Further actions will pend on the survey results.

“This may include keeping the area closed, or introducing a six- knot speed limit to allow access to water skiing in a secondary area which is in deeper water.”

Kayaking and other activities will still be permitted in this popular area. de-
