Theatre heads for its next stage

- VICTORIA NUGENT

TOWNSVILLE Civic Theatre is taking curtain call ... for six months anyway.

The Townsville Academy of Performing Arts’ ( TAPA) end- of- year concert on Saturday night will be the last performance at the theatre before renovations begin on Monday.

It will be the second stage of the popular theatre venue’s revamp, intended to upgrade ageing infrastructure and equipment.

The theatre, built in 1978, will close for the first half of 2018 while the work is completed.

The refurbishments will include improving disability access, upgrading the fire safety system, fixing the roof, upgrading electric sys- its tems, lighting, security and orchestra systems and new wall and floor finishes. A Townsville City Council spokeswoman said every effort had been made to ensure there was minimal disruption to any upcoming performances.

“Any productions booked before the refurbishment dates were decided have been moved to the Riverway Arts Centre,” she said.

TAPA director Katrina Sayce said a lot of people used the venue and improved lighting systems would help enhance future performances.

“The Townsville Civic Theatre are very professional and they’ll benefit from having upgrades in technology,” she said.

“It will be great to see what they do.”
