Clothing makes a difference at Lae

- RACHEL RILEY

THE 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment has delivered handmade clothes to children as part of a Townsville high school’s campaign to dress children around the world.

Members from the 3CER recently delivered 150 dresses, shorts and skirts made by Kirwan State High school students to children in Lae, Papua New Guinea.

Commanding officer LtCol Jen Harris said her unit was delighted to support the school in such a great project, directly benefiting the next generation of Papua New Guineans.

“The 3rd Brigade has strong and enduring relationship with the PNG Defence Force,” said LtCol Harris.

“This initiative reinforces that relationship, supporting Townsville schoolchildren to make a difference to those in Igam Barracks community.”

Delivery by 3CER was conducted during Exercise Pukpuk, a military engineering skills building and infrastructure development- focused exercise in Papua New Guinea.

As part of this exercise, a mentor team deployed to Lae to deliver engineer specific training to the second lieutenants of the PNGDF Engineer Battalion.

It was there in Lae, at Igam Barracks, that Igam Elementary School was delighted to be presented the generous package of dresses and shorts by the 3 CER Exercise Pukpuk team on behalf of the students of Kirwan High.

3CER’s Lieutenant Jade Pregelj said she was honoured and humbled by the opportunity to deliver the clothing.

“The smiles on the children’s faces was priceless,” said Lt Pregelj.

“The Kirwan High students did such an amazing job.

“They should be extremely proud.”

The Dress a Girl Around the World campaign was established by Hope 4 Women International in 2006 and aims to bring dignity to women around the world.

Kirwan High School, building on its work in 2016, this year included shorts this year so that young boys benefit.
