Green zone patrols will net anglers

-

ANGLERS caught fishing in protected zones on the Great Barrier Reef this Christmas per riod can expect to lose their catch and plenty of cash.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has i introduced a zero- tolerance approach for recreational fishers in no- take green zones this h holiday season – guaranteeing a $ 2100 fine for anyone caught with their lines in the water.

GBRMPA field management director Richard Quincey said illegal fishing was among the main threats to the reef.

“The green zones are really important to the reef because they provide the places where there is bigger fish, better fish, and they breed more,” he said.

“To tackle this threat ( of illegal fishing) we have aerial and on- water compliance patrols running day and night.”

Mr Quincey said most recreational fisherman did the right thing but some people deliberately broke the law. He also said ignorance would not be considered an excuse.

He said one- third of all recreational fishing offences occurred in green zones between Ayr and Mission Beach.

Fishers can visit gbrmpa. gov. au or download the free Eye on the Reef app to access green zone maps.

Anyone who witnesses illegal fishing activity is encouraged to call 1800 380 048.
