NO RELIEF FROM MUGGY DAYS

- KELSIEKELS IORIO

TOWNSVILLE’S hot, humid weather shows no sign of abating any time soon.

The weather bureau says there is a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms early this week but cannot confirm likely rainfall.

Meteorologist Andrew Bufalino said there was potential for significant falls.

“There’s enough atmospheric wind to push those storms towards Townsville but we’ve seen it 1000 times where it just misses Townsville,” he said.

The bureau says that while humidity levels are a good sign for rain, there are no promises of falls in the immediate Townsville region.

“We do take into account moisture levels and it is quite moist at the moment,” Mr Bufalino said. “It’s a good indication that we could get some good falls, but it’s almost impossible to pinpoint a rainfall number. “It’s very hit and miss.” Looking to later in the week, the potential remains for showers but Townsville residents are encouraged not to get their hopes up.

“Most of the rainfall will be confined to the western part of the district. We’re not expecting much rainfall ( in Townsville) from that activity,” Mr Bufalino said.

Temperatures are set to remain average for December, with warm, muggy nights keeping the minimums hovering between 23C and 25C. “For this time of year the average is around 31.5C so it’s nothing too unusual,” Mr Bufalino said.

While no spectacular rainfall is expected, the weather is predicted to remain humid enough to not present bushfire conditions.

“Right now it’s very muggy so it’s not ideal conditions for fires,” Mr Bufalino said. “Given it hasn’t been too wet, it’s definitely something you should always keep an eye on.”

The bureau has predicted average weather for most of the state this week after areas of southeast Queensland were hammered by damaging hail up to 7cm in diameter over the weekend.

“The conditions are not looking too significant for Queensland as a whole,” Mr Bufalino said.
