JUNIORS GET TING TASTE OF LIFE AS A MAROON

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

MORE than 150 of North Queensland’s most promising junior rugby league players have been treated to the State of Origin experience.

Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters has been the guest of honour at the 31st annual QRL Mendi Northern Division Summer Camp being held at James Cook University, which this year includes players from as far away as Western Australia.

Walters took local coaches through a training program on Monday before imparting his wisdom on the region’s emerging players yesterday, and Cowboys and Townsville Blackhawks players have also been lending their assistance during skills sessions.

Open to boys aged 12 to 18 years, the fourday camp not only focuses on rugby league but off- field issues as well.

“It’s been fabulous, and it’s a great opportunity for the young players and the coaches to gain some more knowledge about rugby league and share some experiences with the kids about how great the rugby league world can be,” Walters said.

“I know these camps have been very successful over the years, and it’s a great experience for the kids.

“They learn a lot about footy and also a lot about life. “A big part of it is also meeting new people.” QRL Northern Division manager Scott Nosworthy said the junior players were receiving a “second to none” footy experience.

“The quality of coaching these kids will get is of the highest level,” he said.

“Most of our staff here are high performance coaches, and we also have some mentor coaches.

“We normally get a good mix of players from all across the region and they’re always willing to get the most out of the camp.

“A big thanks has to go to Kevin Walters for coming along as well, it’s a massive coup for us to get him up here.”
