NORTH Queensland has lost a skilled worker to Sydney after Amanda Ching was repeatedly rebuffed by employers only to find work in Australia’s largest city.

The Bulletin reported in September that Ms Ching ( pictured) had struggled to find work in Townsville despite an impressive resume.

She had worked in highpressure environments on the floor of the Singapore Exchange and boasted experience in human resources and as an operations manager but it was not enough to land her a job in Townsville.

She had carefully tailored her resume and cover letters for about 50 jobs and had been rejected every time. One employer told her she had too much experience.

“He said my resume was too powerful, that I was overqualified,” Ms Ching told the Bulletin in September.

Ms Ching yesterday said she had found work as an IT professional at an international banking firm in Sydney.

“It’s disappointing that I wasn’t able to find work in Townsville,” she said.

Ms Ching said she had decided to apply further afield after being repeatedly rejected in North Queensland.

Her partner Martin Blue said Ms Ching had applied for jobs in Townsville and se- cured some interviews with major banks and a hospital but to no avail.

“She always knew it was too rural for her in Townsville, coming from Singapore,” he said. “I believe they were intimidated by her resume, having worked with foreign banks at the stock exchanges.

“They take a look at her resume and think ‘ if I employ her she’ll take my job’, so they look for an excuse not to hire her. “She threw her hat into the ring in Sydney and got a job almost straight away.” Mr Blue said he loved North Queensland but was disappointed his partner had not been able to find work. “To other people in the same position, my advice is don’t think you can do everything here,” he said. “At the end of the day we’re a big rural city, not a global c o m m u n - ity.” Ms Ching will begin in Sydney in early January.
