NATION Nurse powerless to help crash victims

- CASSIE ZERVOS GENEVIEVE ALISON

A NURSE yesterday described how she ran towards a fiery crash in Melbourne’s west which claimed the lives of three people in a Christmas Eve tragedy.

Kristy Kitto, who lives less than five metres from the scene in Point Cook, said she raced out to the crash as soon as she heard the “horrific bang”.

Ms Kitto fought back tears as she described how she tried to free the trapped driver of the second car after realising “nothing could be done” to save her passenger.

“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen … I’m trained to save lives but I just felt so hopeless,” she said.

The 35- year- old driver from Tarneit continued to fight for life in the Alfred Hospital last night with police confirming she was in a critical but stable condition.

Police Minister Lisa Neville yesterday urged drivers to take care on Victoria roads in wake of the tragic smash, which police believe was caused by a speeding driver of a black Audi.

Close friends of the two men travelling in the Audi said they were “heartbroken” when they heard the “gut wrenching” news on Christmas morning.

“We got the call at 7am this morning. What can we say – we’re broken,” a friend said.

The three friends were among locals and first responders who visited the crash scene yesterday afternoon to pay their respects and lay floral tributes.

The friends told Melbourne’s Herald Sun one of the victims was a 35- years- old man.

“He was the guy we all wanted to be, the guy we looked up to and admired,” he said.

Police yesterday took possession of footage captured of a black Audi speeding moments before the fiery smash.
