Simple act of kindness

-

IN today’s world of crime, drugs, destruction and self- importance, it is very rare to hear of strangers getting involved in thinking of others.

But on December 14, after an unexpected encounter at my regular butcher shop in Tavern St, my cynicism of living in a self- absorbed world suddenly was turned upside down and my 92 years of scepticism was proved to be unwarranted.

The butcher was inquiring after the whereabouts of my daughter who usually takes me shopping and I was explaining to the butcher the reason for my daughter’s absence, which was, she was in intensive care in the hospital after being knocked over by a cyclist while she was walking, the result being horrific, life- threatening head injuries.

I was unaware that another customer whom I did not know was listening and saw my distress.

Suddenly the customer left the store and returned, handing me a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

This incident absolutely took me by surprise and to this kind generous lady, who left without giving her name, I would like to take this opportunity to give you my heartfelt thanks. Because of your thoughtfulness, you have certainly renewed my faith in human nature.

Strangers like you show us all what a simple act of genuine kindness can mean to someone who is distressed and in need of encouragement. Thank you. E. MORRIS,

Kirwan.
