TOWNSVILLE is experiencing a “woman drought” and the Defence base, prison and university have led to lopsided numbers in certain suburbs.

Social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle said there were more men than women of “dating age” in Townsville. That trend is the opposite

Cairns, leading Mr in McCrindle to suggest women looking for partners in Cairns may want to turn their gaze south to Townsville.

There are more men in Annandale, close to Lavarack Barracks, at a rate of 54.5 per cent to 45.5 per cent.

Mr McCrindle said the nature of the military meant men often outnumbered women in suburbs close to Defence bases.

There may be more men than women overall in Townsville, but some suburbs were experiencing “man droughts”.

An analysis by the Townsville Bulletin showed 30 of the city’s suburbs were dominated by men and there were more women in 24 localities.

Women have the edge in Kirwan, where there are about 770 more females and 41.3 per cent of people are unmarried.

The areas with the greatest disparities include Beach Holm in the northeast, where the male population is 76.9 per cent, and Murray, where 35.4 per cent of people are unmarried and there are more men at a rate of 86.3 per cent to 13.7 per cent

There are also more women in Douglas with James Cook University home to large numbers of female students.

Michael Robinson is one of the many single men in Townsville and said it was not easy to meet potential partners.

“If there was more in the way of events for single people to go to that would help things,” he said. “I find the best way to meet women is through friends.”

There are slightly more women in Australia than men.

Mr McCrindle said the ratio in Australia was about 103 women for every 100 men.
