Time for pollies to deliver

-

AS THE re- elected state member for Thuringowa, I would like to graciously acknowledge and thank those voters who returned me as their local MP.

Much has been ventilated regarding the outcome, particularly by the LNP. However, in my summation of the 2017 state election, it was indeed good, hard, work. Regularly being out in the electorate and representing your constituents to the level people expect in the Parliament and actually delivering on a range of areas is key.

I have spoken with thousands of electors in the last three years. I know that listening to your constituents is paramount to being an effective representative and legislator. My constituents know that I use the phrase “actions speaks louder than words”. This has been demonstrated in delivering infrastructure like the Riverway Drive Duplication, Hervey’s Range Road Upgrade, Kirwan High Hall or Kirwan Ambulance Station funding, and I did not need to use the “promise of funding” on any of these during the election campaign. I just got the job done along with the help of the Thuringowa community.

And now there is much more work to do. I also take this opportunity to respond to LNP MPs Last and Costigan to the south of the city given their recent election commentary. “Costo” was right in his observations that he should have got the gig as LNP shadow deputy, because the poor and dismal performance of Dale Last as shadow minister in the former term was on show for all to see. One lousy question in three years in the last week of the Parliament to former MP Bill Byrne in his then role as Agricultural Minister was a dismal performance and that is simply not good enough.

I would think the good people of the Burdekin expect more from their MP, so it is little wonder the result was so close in that electorate.

There is a lot of puff from the Whitsunday member but not much more. In Townsville, we still have three Labor members, including a cabinet minister and I know collectively we will continue to work hard to deliver for our city on jobs, generating major infrastructure like the Port Expansion, Water Pipeline, Powering North Qld Plan and the North Qld Stadium as well as continuing to tackle our challenging social issues.

So with the 2017 state election now behind us, can we please just get on with it. The political pundits that predicted all sorts of things will happen can now rest for a while and give us all a break. For those who predicted Labor would lose Thuringowa, you were wrong, now please deal with it and move on with life.

As your MP, I do look forward to working with, and importantly for you, again in the new year and the 56th term of the Queensland Parliament.

AARON HARPER MP, State Member for Thuringowa.
