Hurt man accused of stabbing seeks bail

- LUCY SMITH

A MAN is accused of stabbing an associate with a kitchen knife during a drinking session at Garbutt.

Raymond Presley was charged with grievous bodily harm and faced Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday with his right arm in a sling.

Prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Todd said the alleged victim needed surgery for nerve damage after Presley stabbed his leg twice on December 30.

Defence solicitor Mikaila Ward applied for bail, saying Presley would defend the charge.

“The victim became agitated with the defendant and armed himself with knife. They engaged in a physical fight,” she said.

“My client instructs that he was stabbed first in the chest and wrist area, as your honour can see he’s sustained an injury.”

Ms Ward said if granted bail, Presley could live with his mother at Stanley St.

Sgt Todd said Presley took the knife from the man and stabbed him.

He then allegedly dropped the knife and punched the victim.

She objected to bail, saying Presley had previously failed to appear in court seven times.

Presley has previously been convicted for stabbing a person’s shoulder with a knife and causing a deep wound.

Acting Magistrate Richard Lehrmann said he needed more information about the strength of the Crown case, as self defence may have been involved.

The part- heard bail application is expected to continue today.
