Thieves run after crash

DVO breaches prevalent on New Year’s Eve

A GROUP of four car thieves fled the scene after crashing into another car on Bowen Rd last night.

Police said the stolen Mitsubishi Magna was seen driving erraticall­y before crossing on to the wrong side of the road and colliding with a Toyota Camry about 7.20pm.

The four people inside the stolen car were seen running away from the accident.

A man in the Camry was taken to hospital by ambulance after complainin­g of a headache and difficulty breathing.

Police did not have descriptio­ns of the offenders who were still on the run last night.

Meanwhile earlier yesterday, a group of young criminals taunted police, rammed a police vehicle and declared A STRING of men has faced Townsville Magistrate­s Court after alleged domestic violence incidents on New Year’s Eve.

Four men, who cannot be named to protect their alleged victims, were allowed bail on charges of contraveni­ng a domestic violence order ( DVO). One was refused bail.

Prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Todd said a Kelso man attacked his partner when she “you stole our land” to a motorist during a rampage in Townsville.

About 8am on Sunday, an orange 2014 Isuzu D- Max Dual Cabwas reported stolen from a home in West End.

Townsville district duty officer Senior Sergeant Kylee Haydon said the vehicle rammed a police car about 4.40am yesterday at the in- arrived home in a taxi at 5.30am yesterday.

“On arrival at the address, she told the taxi driver she was going in to get money to pay for the fare,” she said.

“While still in the front yard area, she was met by the defendant.

“He grabbed her by the hair and struck her a number of times on the body with a closed fist.”

The man allegedly took the woman inside and the taxi driver phoned police. tersection of Ingham Rd and Hugh St at Garbutt.

“The vehicle had been stolen about 24 hours earlier and was involved in a number of property offences, including break and enters,” she said.

“Three juveniles in the vehicle have all been identified and are still outstandin­g.

“( They) took off ( and) almost run me off the road when they turned to head to Charters Towers Rd through a red light. The car is dinged up on the left- hand side.”

The offenders reportedly taunted police by posting on social media “you can’t catch us”.

Despite that major incident, Townsville police were pleased with the behaviour of residents during New Year’s Eve celebratio­ns.

Acting Inspector Darren Randall said throughout the night they detected 15 drink drivers and issued 10 public nuisance notices.

“For the number of people who engaged in party activities in Townsville, we are quite happy with the behaviour of the residents,” he said.

Acting Insp Randall said there were 78 motoring infringeme­nt notices issued, 41 of which were speeding.

“The message we put forward to motorists is drive to the conditions on the road,” he said.

“Fifteen drink drivers too many.”
