Big saltie awaits any tempted travellers

- DANIEL BATEMAN

A LARGE crocodile that has been following a car ferry as it crosses a Cape York river has a Far Northern mayor fearful of motorists having a close encounter with the croc.

A 4m- 5m saltwater crocodile ( above) has been photographed swimming alongside the ferry at Jardine River crossing, 750km northwest of Cairns.

With the water level dropping in the river, Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council Mayor Eddie Newman fears the animal poses a danger if anyone chooses to cross the waterway in their own vehicle and becomes bogged.

Cr Newman said there had always been crocs in the river, but it was strange that the reptile had taken to following the ferry as it moved back and forth across the waterway.

“It’s the first time we’ve actually seen a croc come up to the ferry, where the photo was taken,” he said.

The water level is extremely low in the river due to a lack of rainfall across the region.

Cr Newman said he was concerned that motorists may bypass the ferry and attempt to cross the river themselves.

“The rangers are aware of the situation,” he said. “I think I’ll leave it in their hands.

“There’s a few crocs around, but this one is getting a bit too close for comfort.

“The ferry’s there for a reason – and there are warning signs up.”
