Gym wear certain to play active catwalk role

- KIM WILSON

ETHEREAL maxi dresses, natural linens and minimalist tailoring are set to make a fashion statement in 2018.

Colour clashing and mixing and matching prints and patterns will also be among the hot trends for the new year.

The elevation of active wear continues as well with sportinspired looks wearable beyond the gym. Celebrity stylist Kate Gaskin says the explosion of active wear as fashion is likely to continue.

“Workout gear gets a highfashion makeover this season, with brands like P. E. Nation, Bassike, Life With Bird and Manning Cartell showcasing sport- inspired looks that could just as easily be dressed up for a night out as they could for an inspired session at the gym,” she says.

While international runways offer up endless inspiration, Ms Gaskin says we can look to our own local designers and runways for fashion that speaks to our lifestyle and climate.

The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival stylist says we can expect to see bohemian and folk- inspired pieces on the runway in March which reflects key trends for the year.

“The European runways were awash with looks mixing and matching unexpected prints and patterns, while also incorporating elements of the hand made,” she says.

“At VAMFF, you can expect to see brands such as Kate Sylvester and Morrison interpret the trend in their own way, showcasing florals and quirky prints, hand embroidery and the earthy leathers juxtaposed with the softest silks.

“This season Macgraw too have further explored their old world fairytale aesthetic with a beautiful collection abundant with all the usual trimmings you’d expect from them – quirky prints, lace, femininity and a cool- girl attitude.”

White lace and ethereal maxi dresses were prominent on the international runways and will certainly be featured at VAMFF this year.

“Interpreted in their own way, designers such as Alice McCall, Thurley and Rachel Gilbert will showcase beautiful gowns and dresses with a bohemian, carefree feminine aesthetic,” Gaskin says.

She says natural linens, silks and straw will also be seen through garments and accessories.

“Finished with considered details such as handcrafted buttons and trims, and in the softest natural colour palette, they’ll have you dreaming of a seaside summer escape,” she says.
