$ 2m colt highlights Magic Millions sale

- NATHAN EXELBY

TONY McEvoy secured the mini- replica of his pin- up girl Sunlight for $ 600,000 as the fireworks hit new heights at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast yesterday.

In an extraordinary day of selling, nearly $ 50 million changed hands boosting the gross to $ 88.6 million, as the average soared to $ 225,000.

The day was spearheaded by an I Am Invincible colt from the stakes winning mare Tai Tai Tess, which made $ 2 million — the first yearling to fetch such a price at Magic Millions since 2008. It was knocked down to a triumvirate headed by wealthy American owner Jon Kelly, 81, who noted he was “on budget at one point.”

For the Mitchell brothers of Yarraman Park, which sold the colt, it was the sixth time they’ve had a yearling sell for $ 2 million or more, but a first for their stallion I Am Invincible.

“He was a seriously lovely horse. We tossed up taking him to Sydney, decided to bring him up here and he’s paraded like a dream and the right people liked him,” Arthur Mitchell said.

“It’s nice getting your product here in one piece and having it approved by the market.”

The other big lot yesterday was a full- brother to Queensland Group 1 winner Sizzling, which fetched $ 1.6 million to the bid of trainer Ciaron Maher.
