Smart warns Fire the Boomers time is now

- JON TUXWORTH

MELBOURNE Boomers guard Brittany Smart has warned Townsville Fire they’ve found their mojo at the right time and will enter the WNBL grand final series with the belief they’re the best team in the league.

Although they qualified for the finals in fourth and are yet to beat the Fire in three games this year, the American believes the Boomers can turn the tables when it matters most, beginning with game one in Townsville on Saturday.

The Boomers haven’t played the Fire with their full roster available since their second game of the year, with star centre Elizabeth Cambage a notable omission from their most recent clash through suspension.

Melbourne flew into Fire country yesterday with the belief they can secure the club’s second title.

“We believe in ourselves and feel we’re supposed to win,” Smart said.

“As athletes you always think you’re a good chance and even though we finished fourth, we had some ups and downs and injuries, we always thought and believed we are the best team in the league and we’ll take that strong mentality into this series.”

The Boomers shocked minor premiers Perth by shutting out their semi- final series 2- 0 and the 32- year- old believes they can ride that wave into the decider.

“I do feel like we’re hitting our stride at the right time and when everything’s clicking for us we’re pretty unstoppable,” Smart said.

“We’ve had to change our mindset because all last week we were focusing on Perth and their unstoppable guards, but we respect the strategies Townsville have.

“Their bigs are who they play around but our team is pretty versatile.”
