Brothers chase T20 top spot

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

BROTHERS are playing to top the Townsville Cricket Twenty20 regular competition as they prepare for a showdown against local powerhouses Suburban Parks.

Brothers, who played Wanderers overnight, play Sub Parks today at Tony Ireland Stadium in a game which could determine the make- up of the Twenty20 semi- finals.

Brothers hold a slender lead at the top of the Twenty20 rankings ahead of Wests and Sub Parks, and a win today could hand Brothers direct passage to the next weekend’s grand final.

Brothers earned a thrilling draw with Wests last weekend when Justin Rawlins got the run out of Shaun Curnow on the final ball and Brethren stalwart David Todd expects the same sort of close contests against Sub Parks.

“By all reports I hear they have a full strength team, they’re only missing ( fast bowler) Justin Dixon.

“It’s our last round game and it’s going to be really important.”

Brothers expect to field a handful of up and coming players, along with experienced representative all- rounder Andrew Boyle who returns to action after a long- term hiatus.

“Andrew was very interested in Twenty20 and we’re looking forward to seeing him have a crack,” Todd sad.

“The timing of it around his work just suits him well, and he’s picked up from where he left off a couple of years ago.

“The great thing about this tournament is that our younger guys who are coming up through the grades get an opportunity.”

In today’s other games Sub Parks play a second fixture against Norths, and Wanderers play Norths today and Wests tomorrow.
