- DANNI SHAFIK

Rebecca Graham and Xavier, 6, from Cranbrook, cool off at Alligator Creek yesterday. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rain from today and lower temperatures tomorrow.

RAIN is on the way for North Queensland as the summer heat continues to show minimal signs of relief halfway through the season.

Local residents can look forward to some rain forecast for the region from today after a dry start to the new year.

Weather bureau forecaster Michael Knepp said there were some showers to come later today, continuing into tomorrow, with a southern change moving up the coast. “Things will cool down a little bit,” he said. “We will see temperatures at 34C and 35C ( today) and this will cool down to 30C on Tuesday.

“There is a chance of increasing showers on Tuesday as the change goes through and then a decreasing chance of showers from Wednesday and towards the end of the week.”

Between 5mm and 10mm of rain is predicted to fall today and tomorrow, before dropping back to between 1mm and 5mm on Wednesday and less than 1mm at the end of the week. Townsville has recorded 77.4mm of rain so far this month, in comparison with 98.6mm this time last year.

December last year was also a dry month for the region, with rainfall of 16.8mm in comparison with 31mm in 2016.
