Beer and business talk brew success

- TONY RAGGATT

A TOWNSVILLE event that mixes business networking with beer is going from strength to strength.

Beers Down Friday has been operating for almost three years and will toast its first event of 2018 at the North Queensland Club from 4.30pm this Friday.

According to one of the organisers, Emma Peters, the regional manager for Local Government Association of Queensland procurement services company Local Buy, a glass of beer, consumed in moderation of course, helps break the ice.

“There’s a few like me who can talk a glass eye to sleep but for people who are not naturally extrovert, having a brew can help them chat without being too nervous,” Ms Peters said.

“It’s very casual. People can just come along, grab a beer or sparkling water, meet some people and, hopefully, make some business connections,” Ms Peters said.

She said the program had been successful with some connections turning into enduring friendships.

One reason for its success was the lack of formalities. There was no guest list, agenda or presentation.

Ms Peters said she and some business contacts including Australian Industry Group innovation facilitator Ross Contarino got the idea from the Townsville Chamber of Commerce’s coffee mornings, with the chamber having its first event for 2018 from 8am this Thursday at the Hotel Grand Chancellor.
