Female development program a national stepping stone Reaching for stars
NORTH Queensland United will hold trials at Townsville Sports Reserve for its female development program tonight in a major stepping stone towards the long- term goal of fielding a Women’s National Premier League team.
NQU were unsuccessful in obtaining a WNPL licence for this year.
But the club and North Queensland Football have partnered with Go Full 90 Football Academy and respected local coaches Bill and Ken Mitchell to ensure local female talent still has an elite pathway.
The program will cater for players from under nines to the open women and will link into Football Queensland’s Community Cup in July, with teams chosen to play Mackay and Cairns in regular fixtures.
Go Full 90, is a not- for- profit entity and director John Duncanson said the initiative will ensure females have access to elite coaching and development, and will build the talent pool for another attempt at securing a WNPL licence.
“There’s lots of talent and the clubs have done well in providing training, we’re just looking at providing the next level,” Go Full 90 director John Duncanson said.
“We’ve got to get this program up and running in the juniors and youth and it needs the full support of the clubs and players so we do have a good case to apply for the next opportunity to apply for an NPL licence.
“To be taken seriously for any bid, we have to keep building a strong talent pool here.”
NQ Football and NQ United FC will have control over coaching standards, coaching education in all clubs, service delivery and costs.
Trials start at 4.30pm for under nines to 12s, 6pm for under 13 to 15s and 7.30pm for under 17 to open.
