Hunt still on charges after close coke call
WALLABIES star Karmichael Hunt was metres from a bag of cocaine in the Fortitude Valley before police charged him with drug possession, it can be revealed.
Hunt, 31, was in a car park in the Brisbane night spot when he was approached by officers late last year.
He had been drinking with friends at a bar before leaving.
Police had alleged the rugby star dropped a bag of cocaine in the car park as he was approached by officers on December 30.
It is understood 0.7 of a gram of cocaine was found in a bag on the ground. It was found in the vicinity of where Hunt was standing, within a few metres.
Hunt was charged with two counts of drug possession, for alleged possession of cocaine and prescription drug Xanax.
But his defence lawyer Adam Magill said upon viewing body- worn police footage there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the cocaine charge.
He said police provided him with written confirmation they would drop the charge.
Hunt is still charged with possession of Xanax and for contravening a direction, after he was late to an appointment at a police station to provide fingerprints.
When approached by police, Hunt was out with friends including restaurateur Simon BouSamra, 32, who was charged with possession of a mobile phone in connection with the commission of a crime.
His lawyer Brendan Ryan said police had found a text from July referring to “going out and drinking alcohol, grabbing some ice and glasses” and said it was “ridiculous” his client had to appear in court.
He said he would speak with a senior officer in prosecutions.
“I’m going to suggest to him that there was no reasonable suspicion held by police at the time that they intercepted Bou- Samra to ask him for his phone in the first place,” he said.
Hunt returns to court on February 19 and Bou- Samra on February 21.
