STORE CLOSURES DISAPPOINT

- TONY RAGGATT

STOCKLAND Townsville has acknowledged recent store closures but says the future is bright for retail and expects more new brands to open this year.

Stockland Townsville centre manager Malcolm Miller was commenting on the closure of stores including Brumby’s, Leonard’s, Witchery, Cue and R2 Reds Salon.

Mr Miller said Stockland Townsville was undergoing some key retailer changes.

“While we are disappointed to see the closure of some stores, overall the centre is experiencing a high demand from retailers and has seen an increase in the average spend per customer visit,” Mr Miller said.

“We’re continuing to introduce a number of exciting new stores at Stockland Townsville Shopping Centre to respond to changing customer needs.

“Over the past 12 months we relocated nine stores to new and improved tenancies and opened six new stores including H& M and Rip Curl. Our exclusive brands including Peter Alexander, Mimco and Universal continue to be top performers at the centre.”

Mr Miller said they were anticipating further retail remixing and the arrival of new brands into the Townsville region.

“We believe the future looks bright for retail in Townsville and look forward to announcing more over the coming months,” he said.
